Overview
The ASD Essentials for Cloud is a cybersecurity framework developed by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) to help organizations protect cloud-based environments from sophisticated cyber threats. As part of the broader ASD Essentials series, the framework is specifically designed for organizations whose technology environments are delivered primarily through Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings, and that do not operate their own server or network infrastructure. The framework provides a risk-based and threat-informed approach to cloud security, focusing on areas that cloud consumers can directly influence, including identity management, data protection, application security, cloud configurations, integrations, and cloud service provider assurance.
Like all ASD Essentials chapters, the framework is built around three core components: Principles, which define the cybersecurity outcomes to be achieved; Actions, which describe the activities required to achieve those outcomes; and Domains, which identify where those actions should be applied. This structure enables organizations to prioritize cybersecurity activities based on risk while aligning security practices with modern cloud architectures and evolving cyber threats. The framework forms part of ASD's evolution of the Essential Eight into a broader, environment-specific cybersecurity model covering Enterprise IT, Operational Technology (OT), and Cloud environments.
The guidance helps organizations strengthen cyber resilience, improve governance and visibility, manage cloud security risks, protect sensitive information, and ensure secure use of cloud services while maintaining alignment with ASD cybersecurity principles and modern defensible architecture practices.
