Overview
The ASD Essentials for Operational Technology (OT) is a cybersecurity framework developed by the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) to help organizations protect operational technology environments from sophisticated cyber threats. As part of the ASD Essentials framework, it provides targeted guidance for systems that monitor or directly control physical devices, processes, and events, including industrial control systems (ICS), process automation systems, cyber-physical systems, instrumentation, and critical infrastructure environments. The framework is specifically designed for organizations operating complex control, automation, and safety systems across sectors such as energy, water, transportation, healthcare, manufacturing, and critical supply chains.
The framework adopts the ASD Essentials structure of Principles, Actions, and Domains, providing a risk-based and outcome-focused approach to cybersecurity. It organizes implementation activities across eight domains, including technical and capability domains, and guides organizations through prioritized phases designed to improve cyber resilience while accounting for the operational, safety, and availability requirements unique to OT environments. Key focus areas include governance, asset identification, risk management, network segmentation, OT isolation, remote access security, supply chain security, incident response, resilience, and recovery planning. Unlike traditional IT-focused frameworks, the guidance recognizes the challenges of legacy systems, long asset lifecycles, safety-critical operations, and limited maintenance windows common in OT environments.
The framework aligns with the Australian Signals Directorate's broader cybersecurity guidance, including the Information Security Manual (ISM), and is intended to help organizations progressively strengthen the security of OT environments while maintaining operational continuity and safety.
