Overview
The Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) is Ghana’s primary data protection legislation, enacted to protect the privacy of individuals and regulate the processing of personal information. The Act establishes the Data Protection Commission (DPC) as the national supervisory authority responsible for monitoring compliance, investigating complaints, and maintaining the Data Protection Register. It sets out key data protection principles governing the collection, use, storage, disclosure, and security of personal data, and defines the rights of data subjects, including rights of access, correction, and objection to certain forms of processing. The Act also requires data controllers to register with the Commission and implement appropriate safeguards to protect personal information. By providing a comprehensive framework for responsible data handling, the legislation promotes privacy, accountability, and trust in Ghana’s digital and business environments.
